Toyota Motor has recently put out a message telling folks who own around 50,000 older cars in the US to park them and get them fixed up right away. They're talking about a problem with the airbags that could blow up and hurt or even kill the person driving.
The company from Japan said this "Don't Drive" advice includes certain Corolla and Corolla Matrix models from 2003-2004, along with some 2004-2005 RAV4s. They've got these airbags made by a company called Takata, and apparently, they've been causing a lot of trouble.
More than 30 people worldwide, including 26 in the US, have died because of these Takata airbags since 2009. And there have been hundreds of injuries, too. The issue is that sometimes these airbags explode and send bits of metal flying inside the car.
Over the past ten years, more than 67 million Takata airbag inflators have been called back in the US by over 20 different car companies. It's the biggest car safety recall ever, with over 100 million inflators being recalled worldwide.
Toyota mentioned that the RAV4 recall is about the driver's airbag, while the others are about the front passenger airbag. In some Corolla and Corolla Matrix models, there's even another problem where the airbag might pop out without any crash happening.
Other car companies have also told people not to drive cars with these old Takata airbags after deadly accidents. Toyota didn't say if any bad accidents made them say "Don't Drive" this time.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration didn't say anything about it right away. Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, told 29,000 owners of 2003 Dodge Ram trucks to stop driving them immediately after someone got killed because of a Takata airbag exploding.
Back in November 2022, Stellantis asked 276,000 folks with older cars to stop driving them after three more deadly accidents. And in February 2023, Honda told 8,200 people with certain Acura and Honda cars not to drive them after a driver died because of a faulty Takata airbag. Honda has had 17 deaths and over 200 injuries in the US because of these bad airbags.
